Abstract

Joseph Hendel explores the complex power relations entrenched in contemporary hegemonic masculinities and digital capitalism. By revisiting his performance titled xxXtedXxx, the artist analyzes three tactical moves for resisting the dominant structures within the TED epistemology.

Author Biography

  • Joseph Hendel

    Joseph Gold Hendel (b. 1985, New York City, USA) is a performance artist, theatre director, playwright, and researcher based in Co. Galway in the West of Ireland. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in practice-based artistic research at the Burren College of Art / University of Galway, where he focuses on how performance art and artificial intelligence can represent and critically analyze the intersections between hegemonic masculinities and digital capitalism. He holds a B.A. in Music from Yale University and an M.F.A. in Theater and Dance Directing from UC San Diego. Joseph has directed his plays in New York, San Diego, Galway, Gniezno (Poland), and online. His performance works have been presented in Ireland, in Brussels at the (Pas si) Fragile! festival, and in Vilnius at the Not Quite King, Not Quite Fish artistic research symposium. He was a fellow of the multi-year, multi-country Erasmus+ Performing Identity performance art program, a participant at the 2024 Parl residency in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and is a regular resident artist at the cell theatre in New York City.
