About the Journal

Publisher

LANDING is a project of the Doctoral Department of Vilnius Academy of Arts. LANDING's publication and human labour is financed by the Vilnius Academy of Arts. The journal is printed at Vilnius Academy of Arts Publishing House (Leidykla) and is available in the open source Open Journal System.

Scope

LANDING is an international platform that facilitates critical and creative artistic inquiry, with a special focus on research methods and an ethos of research. LANDING was established in 2024 by Miklós (Miki) Ambrózy, Sophie Durand, and Povilas Marozas, with the tireless support of Ieva Butkutė and Adomas Žudys.

Objectives

LANDING is focused on how practice-based research is done on the ground, in the studio, in the  world, with and through materials and other forms of life. Rather than existing in the space of theory and speculation, LANDING  is focused on the doing of research and its explicit or tacit methods. It wants to operate as a space of conversation and resource for fellow practitioners. LANDING wants to imbue encouragement and excitement about the trajectory of research done by artists, designers, architects; one’s own as well as the research of others.

LANDING  is designed to be multilingual - we accept submissions in all languages and will endeavor to support  researchers with translations into English and Lithuanian.

Values

Through its operations, Landing commits to

  • listening to people, spaces, species, and milieus as they are present in the journal's content and to respond to them with purpose and respect.
  • transferability, nothing is done alone or for the first time, just as we ask others to invite readers into the world of their practice Landing too is an open resource and method
  • sharing research methods, and bringing them back to presentations that qualify as art and research in one performance
  • recognising all materialities present
  • imbuing encouragement and excitement about the trajectory of research; one’s own as well as the research of others.
  • speaking in multiple tongues. While English and Lithuanian are the working languages of our work, we acknowledge that there are many languages for artistic research.
  • valuing questions that are generative, adding to the conversation rather than critiquing.
  • creating a platform for sharing work, asking for and receiving feedback on research “in process”
  • an ethos of exchange value, defined as providing a useful forum for the artistic researchers in our community
  • supporting the doctoral department of the Vilnius Art Academy (Vilniaus dailės akademija), by remaining aware of the needs of the current doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers.
  • being flexible and adaptable to a changing community and their unique needs
  • caring for all submitted material and all material being prepared for presentation in the journal.
  • a conversational and discursive attitude
  • remaining open and receptive to feedback while allowing space for sustained discussions
  • intergenerationality
  • being accountable for our mistakes
