Simona Rukuižaitė carries us forward, on foot, to Mount Etna to practice a natural philosophy that casually shifts from poetic associations to scientific facts.

Author Biography

  • Simona Rukuižaitė

Simona Rukuižaitė is a visual artist and researcher who explores immersive engagements with materials that dwell in the landscape. Her practice revolves around poetic gestures of observation, research into the geological origins of earth and mineral pigments, and the contextual environments in which they occur. Through an interdisciplinary approach rooted in painting and installation, Simona contemplates pigments as geological entities through tactile encounters grounded in empathy for the other-than-human world.
Currently, Simona is a PhD candidate in Fine Arts at Vilnius Academy of Arts in Lithuania. She received her
BA in Monumental Arts (fresco and mosaic) and MA in Site-specific Art. Since 2015, she has participated in
artist residencies and exhibitions in Iceland, Portugal, France, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland.
